porcelain, like late fruit still hanging from the boughs. You would
think the plumbers had finished their job and gone away before the bricklayers
arrived; or else their hydraulic systems, indestructible, had survived
a catastrophe, an earthquake, or the corrosion of termites.' (Italo

Cobbings sculpturale acties zijn erop gericht om de fysieke
band tussen een individu en zijn omgeving tegelijk te verstoren en te
versterken. Zijn werk kan geïnterpreteerd worden als een vorm van
primair architecturaal en lichamelijk bewustzijn, dat via magische sculpturale
ingrepen een uitwendig karakter krijgt.
Een residentie aan de British School in Rome opende nieuwe perspectieven
op de psychologische dimensie van Pompeii's erfenis. Als beeldhouwer
was Cobbing al vertrouwd met de werkwijze waarop archeologen de naamloze
slachtoffers van de uitbarsting van de Vesuvius in gips afgegoten hadden.
In zijn meest recente werk bouwt hij verder op Freuds pionierswerk en
diens vergelijking tussen Traumdeutung en archeologie. Voor zijn tentoonstelling
in Netwerk legt William Cobbing de bizarre kronkels van de menselijke
geest bloot door middel van beeldhouwwerk dat artistieke verwijzingen
naar de Oudheid verbindt met bouwelementen bestemd voor sanitair en
rioolstelsels.
De expositie van Els Vanden Meersch
dient ter ondersteuning van de voorstelling van haar nieuwe boek, Implants.
Na Transient constructions (2003) en Paranoid obstructions
(2004) is het de derde keer dat ze ervoor kiest haar fotografisch werk
in boekvorm te bundelen. Meer nog dan in de vorige boeken komt het geheugen
van de architectuur aan de orde: de gevoeligheden die vroeger al in
haar werk aanwezig waren - de controle, de paranoia en het latente geweld
die met bouwkundige ingrepen gepaard gaan - krijgen nu een opvallende
historische dimensie.
In de film The Black Room van Melvin
Moti wordt in een heel langzame camerabeweging een muurschildering
uit de Villa Agrippa in Pompeii afgetast, waar op een zwarte achtergrond
decoratieve elementen geschilderd zijn.
Voor de voice-over construeerde Moti een fictief interview met Robert
Desnos (1900-1945) over de historische hypnotische slaapsessies van
de Parijse surrealisten. De intensiteit van de zwarte materie die traag
voor de camera voorbijglijdt, haakt zich vast in Desnos' aanstekelijke
weergave van de surrealistische experimenten en heft de grenzen op tussen
een recent en eeuwenoud verleden.

William Cobbing's sculptural actions
simultaneously disturb and intensify the physical liaison between
an individual and his environment. He depicts a primary architectural
and corporeal awareness through intriguing interventions.
His stay at the British School in Rome opened new perspectives
on Pompeii's archeological heritage and it's psychological dimension.
As a sculptor, Cobbing was allready familiar with the cast bodies
of anomymous victims of the Vesuvius. In his recent work the analogy
between dreams and excavations serves as a metaphoric departure
for psychic explorations. The peculiar mechanisms of the human
mind are externalized through an exhibition blending sculptural
references to Antiquity with elements of sewer systems and sanitary.
After Transient constructions (2003) and Paranoid
obstructions (2004), Els Vanden Meersch presents
the third release of her photographic work in book format. Central
theme is the memory of architecture. The historical scope of her
latest publication reinforces the thematic sensibilities of her
earlier photographic work: the control mechanisms, the paranoia
and the latent violence behind large-scale building constructions.
The screening of Black Room by filmmaker Melvin
Moti connects closely to William Cobbing's exhibition.
The camera slowly pans the length of a Roman wall setting, an
image that is practically suspended in time. It is about fragmentary
views of sacred and idyllic scenery of The Black Room, from the
Villa Agrippa in Boscotrecase (Pompeii).
The voice-over is a rendition of a fictional interview with Robert
Desnos (1900-1945) about the hypnosis and sleeping sessions of
the Parisian surrealists. The intensity of the black image entangles
with Desnos' contagious report, blurring the boundaries between
ancient and recent past.
