mission statement
Netwerk / center for contemporary art represents a complete and dynamic platform upon which artists from home and abroad can create their work in the best conditions and exhibit for an interested public. Exhibitions, concerts, performances, film and video presentations, lectures, publications and residences collectively place visual arts within a broad social context. Each of these presentations is part of a process operation, a phase in the development of the exhibition makers and their public.
For each exhibition Network grants space to the artist (the curator, the researcher, the visitor …): not only physically, in front of and behind the scenes, but also space in time – the period of preparation and presentation of experience and reflection. Working with a process operation means to say that Network supports the artists content-wise – in the form of consultations, financial support – with a just fee and a realistic production budget; and executive-wise – in providing assistants to help with the technical and artistic realisation of the work. It means that the artist gets feedback during the creation of the exhibition and beyond – that ranges from promotional support through the writing of insightful and contemplative texts, to instigating contact and interaction with other exhibition spaces. Through its growing number of contacts within the organization, Network’s plans for the future are to extend and strengthen a new impetus towards international initiatives, which should lead to true international collaborations.
Exhibitions at Network go much further than the standard use of the traditional exhibition space. A solidly built peripheral and a continuous system of residencies ensure the visual arts a place in a much larger artistic and social framework. An easily accessible industrial building with a spacious, flexible and professional infrastructure, located at the cross roads between large city happenings in Brussels and Flanders, creates unique opportunities for experimentation and reflection.
